Choora and Kaleere: Sikh & Punjabi Bride Traditions
Choora and kaleere are beloved Punjabi bridal traditions: the choora is the set of red-and-white (or ivory) bangles a bride wears, traditionally gifted by her maternal uncle (mama), while kaleere are golden, umbrella-shaped ornaments tied to the bangles — both symbolising blessings, prosperity and the joy of the new chapter.
The Choora Ceremony
On the wedding morning, the bride's mama and family present and place the choora on her wrists in an emotional ceremony, often with milk and rose petals, and the bride traditionally does not look at them until fully dressed.
The Kaleere
Friends and sisters tie kaleere to the choora; a playful custom has the bride shake them over unmarried friends — whoever a piece falls on is said to be next to marry.
Cultural, Not Religious
These are cultural Punjabi customs enjoyed alongside the Anand Karaj, celebrating the bride with love and blessings.
