Dowry and Sikhi: What the Gurus Taught

Sikhi firmly rejects dowry. Guru Amar Das Ji explicitly condemned the practice, teaching that the only true dowry is the Naam (God's Name) and a life of virtue — not material demands. A genuine Sikh marriage should never involve dowry, and any demand for one is a serious red flag.

What the Gurus Said

The Gurus taught the equality and dignity of women and rejected the transactional treatment of marriage. Dowry has no sanction in Gurbani; it is a social ill the Gurus actively opposed.

A Warning Sign

If a family or match raises dowry expectations, treat it as a serious red flag about their values.

A Marriage of Equals

A Sikh marriage is a partnership of equals built on love and respect — never a transaction.
