What Happens at an Anand Karaj, Step by Step
An Anand Karaj follows a clear order: the families gather and complete the Milni, everyone enters the gurdwara darbar, an opening ardaas and hymns are sung, the significance of marriage is explained, the couple and parents consent, and then the four laavan are read and sung as the couple circle the Guru Granth Sahib — followed by closing hymns, ardaas and langar.
Before the Laavan
After the Milni and entry, kirtan is sung and the granthi explains the duties and spiritual meaning of marriage. The couple bow to signify consent.
The Four Laavan
The heart of the ceremony: each of the four laavan is read then sung while the couple walk around the Guru Granth Sahib.
After the Laavan
The ceremony closes with Anand Sahib, ardaas, a hukamnama and karah parshad, followed by langar.
